Blogs are web logs or web pages that serve as a publicly accessible location for discussing a topic or issue. It is a virtual learning platform that allows educators to continue class discussions online, poll students, assess understanding, and award badges based on performance. Wikis, weeblys, and wix are types of website creation tools. These tools are easy to use and navigate. Most blogs are free and you are able to customize them to be appealing to your audience. You can publish students creations and publish assignments. You are able to access these on you I-phone and/or tablets. However, with any postings such as pictures, you would first have to have a photo release form filed. Emails and full names are not allowed. For other rights that you must know, you would need to check with your school district website on proper forms. I've learned that having such a site online can benefit everyone involved with the classroom—including the students, the teacher, and the parents. Classroom websites are great places to post newsletter-type information such as classroom events and needs. They are also an ideal space for posting pictures of what is going on in class or on field trips as well as for posting homework directions and study tips.
Blogs and other types website-creation tools can be used to support student learning in content in the classroom. For example, in social studies, students can discover battlefields of civil war such as Kennesaw Mountain. They can video the information guide on its history. From there, they can take pictures of their findings and write about its connections to what they have learned. This would promote higher-order thinking as they are taking text and making application to it by visiting a real site. Their findings can thus be posted on their blogs for others to see their connection.
Here are two laws that we must be aware of that will impact classroom practice. FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) monitors the academic, attendance, disciplinary and health records necessary for maintaining thorough and current information on each student. CIPA (Children's Internet Protection Act) have restrictions such as Internet safety policies and technology which blocks or filters certain material from being accessed through the Internet. I've learned that avators are a great way to replace a picture of someone. Also having a "fake" name or slogan is ideal for replacing real names. While keeping these points in mind, I desire to create a blog that will be interactive and meaningful for my students and parents. It would allow for comments and questions and allow me to give feedback about the classroom.
